Castell de Ferro The twin villages of Castell de Ferro and Gualchos are of varied and attractive appeal. Gualchos is a clean, white village, high in the hills, that is officially declared 'of tourist interest'. Just 4 km (2.5 miles) away lies Castell de Ferro, on the shores of the Mediterranean, where the water is transparent and inviting. Castell is the home of Costa Tropical Property Sales. A small fishing village of narrow, winding streets clustered around the church square that provides home for a few shops, bars and restaurants and opens out on one side to the sea. The square is the heart of the community and provides a meeting place for locals and a comfortable place to sit, eat and drink whilst watching village life and looking out to the fishing boats on the horizon. It is named after the castle overlooking the village, which was built to defend the natural harbour where iron from the mines of Sierra de Lujar, the Alpujarras, and Conjuro was loaded onto ships. The mineral was transported down to the port along the dry beds of the Gualchos and Cambriles beach. Gualchos is an Arab word meaning 'Hidden river' and at one time it was a large, important village. Today it is sleepy and picturesque high in the hills, still showing the signs of its Moorish occupation in the 15th century. Various sporting activities, both recreational and adventurous, can be enjoyed in the area. Special trails have been created for country walking, mountain biking and horse riding, while speleologists can explore caves such as Las Campanas and Los Murciélagos. Lovers of water sports can go sailing or practice sub-aqua. Gualchos and Castell de Ferro also offer possibilities for hang-gliding and ultralight flying. |
